Conservation

Every year, we all celebrate the arrival of spring with the sight and sound of birds, but it is easy to take this annual event for granted. In the last 50 years, North American bird populations have dropped by more than 25%. TOC actively works to protect birds by reducing human- caused threats to their survival, by preserving habitat, and by advocating for birds at a political level. Although we focus on birds, we recognize their role as an indicator species for the health of ecosystems and biodiversity. We are a Toronto-based club, but our concerns and activities expand well beyond our city limits. Our club networks with other clubs and organizations that share our concern for birds and their well-being. TOC endeavours to keep our members informed and engaged in conservation issues.

Some examples of our recent activities include the following:

  • Voiced concerns about shortcomings in Toronto’s Dog Off-Leash Strategy, including lack of bylaw enforcement on off-leash dogs.
  • Worked with other Toronto organizations to ensure protection of Environmentally Significant Areas in the Toronto Island Master Plan.
  • Participated in getting Toronto certified as a Nature Canada Bird Friendly City.
  • Worked with other provincial organizations to stop the development of a solar farm on an environmentally sensitive area in Carden Alvar.
  • Joined with a Toronto based MPP to introduce bird-friendly building design into the Ontario Building Code.
  • Voiced objections to the province's Bill 5, Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025.
